oh, I hadn't meant that by invade - I mean (in fact the Falklands hadn't even crossed my mind) that surely nothing could be worse than Palin! Palin is...... just, just no.
I'm sure people aren't so shallow as to think that i was her gender at fault..... if they are then there really isn't much of a difference between UK and Australian society after all!

Australian society is much closer to Britain than America etc, but Thatcher's gender did have something to do with it. Because she was the first female PM, she had to make a big impression and was therefre rather insecure. This made her compensate by playing the "Power Woman" - not the best thing when your job involves a lot of diplomatic work. From this, we have learned the following: if you're going to have a woman in a job previously dominated by men, make sure it's someone who's secure in her position. Thatcher = insecure woman in male-dominated job = one of the worst PMs we've ever had. Her Majesty = secure woman in male-dominated job = probably the best Monarch we've ever had!
