On July 5, 1811, Venezuela declared its independence from Spain.
Later, on July 5, 1962, Algeria was granted its independence from France.
And on July 5, 1975, Cape Verde was given its independence from Portugal.
...anybody going to see the celebrations for these? ;D

Americans claim that Britain mistreated them, how right this is is lost in the mists of time, but one thing is known - the British Empire was nicer to live under than the French one. The Algerians were treated as scum in their own land by the French. It was worse during the war - the French were suffering thanks to the Germans so they took it out on the Algerians.
Happy Independence Algeria! Also Venezuala (the world got Hugo Chavez from the deal - what's not to like?) and Cape Verde (though the Portuguese Empire fell apart rather fast thanks to the Spanish and took them down with it, so independence for Cape Verde probably caused a lot of pain for Portugal...)
