jimage, not cool. The two who voted on this should be ashamed, as should the 14 on the PCKF.

It IS a form or racism.
For example, DHeadshot, would you like it if I called you a whining pom?
Jimage, I think you would probably feel the same ways as me about being called.... what ever people call Australians in an attempt to ridicule. Haha, Jimage, would you like to be called a convict? It's not true, but it's annoying that we have that image.

Actually that's how Aussies are known in Britain - we have a derogatory name for most nations, though it's not usually used with any malice...

I just don't understand why you have a poll that is potentially offensive.
Oh, and only a very small percentage of Australians are descendants of British convicts, a lot of the rest came from the gold rushes and from cheap post-WW2 UK-Australia immigrations programs paid for by the Australian government. Chifley I think it was.

I just don't understand why you have a poll that is potentially offensive. They asked for it on IRC. Basically, it's going to happen and it's better that it happens here rather than PCKF, so I'm not objecting. Oh, and only a very small percentage of Australians are descendants of British convicts, a lot of the rest came from the gold rushes and from cheap post-WW2 UK-Australia immigrations programs paid for by the Australian government. Chifley I think it was. Yes but it's a stereotype, like all Americans being mobidly obese imbeciles who drive everywhere, all Polish being the hardest workers on the planet, all French people wearing striped t-shirts and berets and having onions round their necks and carrying French loafs while cycling down the wrong side of the road and eating posh cheese and snails, and all Irish being complete idiots. It's not necessarily accurate - most Americans who know how to use the internet are intelligent for example and I've never seen a real Frenchman wearing a striped t-shirt.

That's odd - our stereotype of the Irish is like that that the US has - somehow associated with leprechauns and drinking! And liking potatoes.

Yes same, but the US dropped the bit about them being fools from the stereotype because most of the original settlers were Irish. Basically, the Irish are seen in Britain the way the Polish are seen by the US...

I can't possibly take offense at this thread because I know (well, I think) that nobody here is ACTUALLY bigoted against French people or Spaniards. I don't really take offense at anything easily to begin with, but especially not if I feel people don't mean it. I look at things like these and find them funny, because they're silly and aren't meant in any way to offend anybody. If people actually seem to sincerely believe that, say, Americans are all lazy and ignorant or that Russians are all nasty gun-happy drunkards or whatever, then I become decidedly more put off. But I fortunately don't encounter that very often, and I see no reason to make a shjtstorm about something that feels really harmless. Now, that isn't to say that ALL humor is harmless just because it's intended as such. Jokes about horrible tragedies are rarely funny, and certainly are never funny if they poke fun at the victims. That's a very different thing though.
