Good question. I suppose it's like asking if the insects who fly at lights know what they are flying at. I wonder if it even notices the light? I mean, the sun is a light....

Good question. I suppose it's like asking if the insects who fly at lights know what they are flying at. The light's the problem. The insects in question navigate by the sun and the moon, which ar so far away that they are always in roughly the same direction (though they move slowly over the course of the day). A lightbulb can be in front of an insect and then it'll fly past it, giving the impression that the insect has suddenly flown off course, so it'll correct itself and end up flying in circles. Eventually it'll go mad and fly at the thing or just give up. Usually when the light is turned off it'll sort itself out and carry on as normal at least. Think of it as navigating purely by a compass and then accidentally stumbling across a magnetised mountain...
